Searching for a stable offensive attack continues for Contra Costa College as they drop another game, losing 4-0 against Monterey Peninsula College’s women’s soccer team on Sept. 15 at the Soccer Field.

With preseason effectively in its twilight stage, the Comet five-game scoring drought is the most glaring deficiency the team has thus far.

For the first time since the opening game, CCC stepped on the field with a sense of conviction and resolve. Even the usually reserved coach Amanda Beckenhauer was more vocal. At some points even to the level of her more brazen assistant Magaly Junco.

Goalie Christy Garcia continued her trend of improvement. She had two saves in the first two minutes of play and she finished the afternoon with a total of six saves.

The greater part of the first half was tightly contested. The Lobos offensive push was the outright antithesis to the Comets bump and grind defense. Engulfed into the heightened intensity of the contest CCC got off five shots on goal in the first 45 minutes of play.

Both teams were yet to score.

“I think we did a lot better getting shots on goal today than we have been.” Beckenhauer said.

The stalemate continued until 10 minutes remained in the first. Just as CCC subs were on deck to replace spent teammates, a shot snuck passed Garcia’s left side into the goal.

MPC made substitutions just minutes earlier. In the minutes that remained before the break MPC midfielder Alma Davila would hammer home two more goals to make it 3-0 at the whistle.

“Coming off of a loss we just wanted to focus on what we do in practice,” Lobos coach Valentina Valdez said. “CCC plays good defense, we had to be on top of our game today.”

The team’s newest forward July Lima is gaining confidence in her short time with the squad. Settling in the attacking half of the field, she brings needed depth to the thin Comet bench.

“(Beckenhauer) really explains positions and puts you where your skills fit the best,” said Lima. “As long as we play motivated and with confidence it’ll keep getting better.”

The second half was a bit like the first — the final goal was scored shortly before five minutes had ticked from the clock.

What followed next can only be described as a bruise and ice earning festival.

Intensity flowed as players hit the deck, officials silenced coaches, and athletes were separated then preventatively warned, repeatedly.

CCC still has 90 minutes left in the preseason to try to put all of the pieces together. The Comets return to action against Hartnell College Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the Soccer Field.
