Since the incident back in early 2019 when the animators had to redesign the quick, blue character due to backlash from fans, the Sonic movies have been very popular and a hit in the movie theaters.

The first two Sonic movies in the series received mixed reviews from critics but were a smash hit with audiences with ratings in the 90s, so it’s probably safe to say the movies were a success. While, like all movies, watching the film at the movie theater is best, it is expected to be available on Paramount Plus first.

The movie starts with Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik stuck on the mushroom planet, which was his conclusion in the first Sonic movie. He is trying to build a device to contact others for rescue. It initially seems that his plans fail and end up electrocuting him, but it turns out to be a success and we are met with another beloved character, Knuckles. Knuckles has a vendetta against Sonic and blames him for his family being killed.

We then cut to Sonic trying to be a hero and stop a robbery, which goes awry, but he gets the job done. He runs back to Green Hills before he is able to be caught by Maddie, Tom’s wife. Sonic meets with Tom and they fish on the lake and talk about how though Sonic wants to help and save people, he’s still a kid and needs to “wait for the opportunity to come to him.”

While Tom and Maddie are away in Hawaii for Maddie’s sister, Rachel’s, wedding, Sonic has the house all to himself and is being a normal kid, trying to hide the mess from Tom, when the house is trashed due to Eggman and Knuckles. We then meet Tails, the yellow furry fox we love, who ends up saving Sonic and helping him escape.

Sonic and Tails end up finding a message on Sonic’s map from Longclaw, rest in peace, that she and others were the protectors of the Master Emerald. It is an object of immense power and shouldn’t fall into the wrong hands. This turns into a race against Knuckles and Eggman to find the emerald and keep it from them.

Sonic and Tails find that the compass to the Master Emerald can be found in the mountains of Siberia. Eggman and Knuckles catch up to the duo and take the compass from them. Instead of going after the compass, Sonic chooses to save Tails, who is unconscious. This means something to Knuckles and we can see his view start to change on Sonic. Eggman causes an avalanche to end Sonic and Tails and Tom ends up having to use a ring to save both of them and causes a ruckus at Rachel’s wedding. Rachel’s fiance ends up revealing himself to be a part of the Guardian Units of Nations. This causes chaos with Sonic, Tom, and Tails and gets them trapped. Maddie and Rachel, end up having to save the three of them.

Eggman and Knuckles end up finding the island that has the underwater temple containing the Master Emerald Sonic ends up having to leave Tails behind due to him being hurt and goes alone to the temple and ends up having to battle with Knuckles while Robotnik fuses with the emerald. This ends up destroying and sinking the tunnel and Knuckles and Sonic barely make it out alive and reconcile with each other and agree to team up to stop Eggman.

After being saved by Tails and his biplane, the trio heads back to Green Hills to stop Eggman. The three work together to defeat Eggman who has created a massive robot from G.U.N.s weapons with his mind. The emerald ends up defusing Eggman but shatters into the Chaos Emeralds. These emeralds end up fusing with Sonic, who turns into Super Sonic. Sonic destroys Eggman’s robot and defeats him before reverting the emeralds back and giving them to Knuckles who restores the Master Emerald. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles all agree to protect the Master Emerald and all is well in Green Hills.

One minor issue I had with the movie is that in some parts, I could see that Sonic wasn’t generated in the same spots when the camera switched angles. In one angle, Sonic would be really close to the object, but in others, he would be farther away from it. It isn’t a big deal, but it was something that I noticed and it did bother me a little bit.

Overall, I really liked the movie. I watched the first one in theaters as well and I liked the first one too, so I was excited to hear about this one coming out. I only had one minor issue with the movie, but other than that, I loved it. I would rate this movie a 4.7 out of 5 stars. I would highly recommend you watch this movie since it’s fun for all ages and adults can even reminisce playing the old Sonic games on the N64 or the Gamecube. Just make sure you stay to watch the ending scene, you won’t regret it.
